Robotaxi Deployment and Regulation

  • Nevada's Transportation Authority authorized up to 8,000 driverless vehicles in Clark County over twelve months, expanding from an interim permit capped at 10: up to 5,000 for Tesla, 1,000 for Waymo, and 1,000 for Uber operating with partners Motional and Zoox
  • Waymo named Munich its first EU market, opening an operational hub and beginning manual driving and HD street mapping across 17 of the city's 25 districts on a round the clock testing schedule, with a validation driver in every vehicle and no commercial rides yet; the company still holds zero German permits and is targeting driverless commercial service by the end of 2027
  • Waymo also registered a commercial entity in Zurich, joining Baidu, which runs its European autonomous mobility hub there under a Level 4 permit with PostBus for the AmiGo service, and WeRide, which has operated at Zurich Airport since 2025 under Switzerland's first driverless passenger permit and plans a commercial launch with Uber this year
  • Uber's robotaxi platform expanded across three continents in a single week: fully driverless service with both Baidu Apollo Go and WeRide in Dubai, a Pony.ai launch with a safety operator in Zagreb, and the start of Wayve powered supervised testing with early riders in London
  • Robotaxi competition also reached San Diego, where Waymo began carrying passengers across a 40 square mile zone spanning Pacific Beach, Sunset Cliffs, Barrio Logan and Normal Heights, while Zoox began testing in central neighborhoods and Tesla Cybercabs were spotted in the city
  • Austin remains the deepest test case for institutional readiness, with Waymo, Zoox, MOIA America, Avride, Tesla and Serve Robotics all operating or testing there while the city works through first responder training, incident reporting and curb management even though local regulatory authority is limited

Robotaxi Economics and Infrastructure

  • Depot and charging infrastructure emerged as its own investment category OTTOYARD is building neutral, multi OEM depot capacity for robotaxi fleets starting in Nashville, while Tesla filed its own Austin permits for a cleaning robot, Supercharger cabinets and an equipment inspection system, plus a second downtown lot for a car wash and charging
  • Battery architecture is becoming a distinct robotaxi cost lever: Addionics argues that expanding usable battery window from 50% to 70% can yield 40% more usable energy from the same pack, or about 29% less required capacity, worth an estimated 5 million dollars in savings across 1,000 robotaxis
  • LiDAR pricing fell from 75,000 dollars in 2007 to under 200 dollars today, a 99.5% collapse that moved margin upstream to Chinese manufacturing scale and downstream to software, where Waymo now sits at a 126 billion dollar valuation while Europe has slipped to the fourth largest player in the category it invented

  • Consolidation reached subscription micromobility: Swapfiets, Europe's largest bike subscription business, reported 91.1 million euros in 2024 revenue, up 7% year on year, while Dance grew to 8.01 million euros from almost nothing in 2021; the two merged in May, taking the combined fleet past 75,000 subscription e-bikes across 45 cities
  • Paris introduced a mandatory helmet requirement for e-scooter riders backed by a 135 euro fine, alongside a new requirement for reflective clothing or a warning vest, citing rising accident numbers and severe head injuries
  • LEVA-EU published an open letter to Commissioner Séjourné arguing that light electric vehicles, including e-bikes, cargo bikes and e-scooters, could replace up to 76% of car trips in Europe, citing a DLR study estimating a 44% cut to Germany's passenger car emissions and 57 million tonnes of CO2eq saved annually if adopted at scale
  • Southwark Council secured an agreement with London's major dockless e-bike operators capping a 20 minute ride at 1.75 pounds for residents and key workers, matching the standard TfL bus fare, alongside 350 new dedicated parking bays and stricter enforcement
  • NABSA's 2025 State of the Industry report counted 237 million shared micromobility trips, up 5% from the prior year, with 70% of riders using shared bikes or scooters to connect to public transport, even as the number of cities running such systems slipped from 415 to 403
  • Tartu terminated its bike sharing contract after a prolonged dispute, and low cost bikes with no unlock fee at 0.05 euro per minute subsequently rolled out in Tallinn and Riga, a model likely to appear in future tenders

Public Transit and Urban Mobility Policy

  • Seoul's 2004 bus reform, which put one agency in charge of route planning, integrated bus and subway fares, and built nearly 100 kilometers of bus only lanes in two years, cut customer dissatisfaction from 56% to 13% within three months and lifted ridership 14% in its first year; the city's public transport now carries 38% of trips against 30% by car
  • Chicago's Madison corridor showed that buses made up only 4% of traffic but carried 46% of travelers at peak, the data point that justified converting car lanes to a bus rapid transit project rather than treating the conversion as a congestion risk
  • Dubai's transport network carried 348.1 million passengers in the first half of 2026, almost 1.9 million people a day, with RTA adding 637 new buses including 40 electric while working toward a fully electric and hydrogen powered fleet by 2050 alongside its existing driverless taxi service
  • Indonesia's mobility platforms, including Gojek, Grab, Bluebird and Green SM, are extending beyond ride hailing into logistics, public transit integration, digital payments, corporate mobility and EV infrastructure as the market matures
  • Como and Brussels restricted bicycles from parts of their historic and pedestrian centers after conflicts with pedestrians, a policy response that road safety researchers argue risks pushing cyclists back onto streets with motorized traffic rather than resolving the underlying space conflict

Logistics, Fleet and Alternative Mobility Infrastructure

  • Porsche Consulting's Last Mile Delivery 2030 paper projects German parcel volumes rising from 4.15 billion in 2022 to 5.4 billion by 2030, while Hamburg plans to cap delivery van share of last mile shipments at 45%; even a fourfold increase in cargo bikes and parcel lockers still leaves roughly 30% of parcels, or about 2.2 million a day nationwide, without network capacity
  • EY-Parthenon's Fleet Management Rewired study frames a shift from Total Cost of Ownership to Total Cost of Mobility, arguing fleet managers must now coordinate public transport, rental cars, charging and shared mobility budgets rather than optimizing company car costs alone
  • Amazon extended on foot walker deliveries into dense Brooklyn neighborhoods, using box trucks to feed handcarts for final block delivery, a model that depends on curbside microhub space cities have not yet built
  • Belmont, North Carolina's Trolley Barn concept, developed with Belmont Trolley Inc. and UNC Charlotte's College of Engineering, proposes converting an edge of downtown parking lot into a combined trolley, regional trail, micromobility and EV charging hub
  • Swedish company Candela raised 30 million euros for its P-12 electric hydrofoil ferry, which the company says uses roughly 80% less energy than a comparable diesel vessel and cuts wake by about 95%, with testing already underway in Stockholm passenger service
  • Advanced air mobility economics remain unresolved: early promises of 3 dollars per mile are colliding with vertiport infrastructure and EASA safety costs, even as Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation are positioned for premium transfers in a market projected at more than 18.9 billion dollars
