Best of Linkedin: Robotics CW 32/ 33
Physical AI moved from framing debate to funded infrastructure this period. Humanoid makers signed real production contracts rather than pilot agreements, investors pushed capital into embodied AI platforms at a pace that outstrips the entire prior year, and enterprise software vendors raced to own the layer that turns robot hardware into a manageable industrial system. The throughline across the period is that the constraint has shifted from proving a robot can act to proving it can be deployed, financed, and supported at scale.

Physical AI: Strategy and Adoption

  • Robot form factor selection is increasingly driven by task complexity rather than by a default preference for humanoid shape, with fixed arms, wheeled manipulators, and quadrupeds still covering the largest share of deployable commercial use cases while biped humanoids remain justified only where mobility, manipulation, and human environment compatibility are all required at once
  • Gartner frames Physical AI through three core capabilities: perceive, reason, and act, positioning the category as considerably broader than robots or drones alone
  • NVIDIA is positioning its Cosmos platform as a foundation model layer for Physical AI, extending its role from compute infrastructure toward model provision in a move that echoes how OpenAI and Anthropic came to dominate foundation models in the digital world
  • Google DeepMind released three physical AI models under the Gemini Robotics name: Gemini Robotics 2 for whole body humanoid control, Gemini Robotics ER 2 for environment reasoning, and Gemini Robotics On-Device 2, marking a genuine advance in coordinated whole body control even as task success rates remain uneven
  • Adoption bottlenecks increasingly trace to organizational decisions on budget ownership and risk rather than to any shortage of AI ambition
  • The World Economic Forum named world models one of its Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2026, while flagging a persistent reliability gap between convincing simulation and real world performance
  • Ecosystem convergence across engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and service functions is emerging as the primary lever for capturing Physical AI value, ahead of any single technology component

Humanoid Robots Move Toward Deployment

  • Mitsubishi Motors plans to mass produce AI powered humanoid robots at its Kyoto plant starting in the first half of 2027, repurposing an unused engine production line for a target capacity of 1,000 robots monthly, deploying them first inside its own factories to address labor shortages
  • UBTECH completed mass delivery of hundreds of Walker S2 humanoid robots to industrial partners in December 2025
  • Unitree's G1 humanoid received an AI upgrade that unifies vision, reasoning, and motion under one system, extending its capability toward household tasks such as folding clothes with minimal human assistance
  • Arvato is running a single robotic control system live across fulfillment sites in Dortmund, Gütersloh, and Memphis, with no rebuild required per site
  • Reimagine Robotics, founded by former Google DeepMind applied robotics lead Jonathan Scholz, cut new behavior prototyping time from about a day to about ten minutes at an electronics disassembly site by having workers train robots through demonstration rather than specialist programming
  • Tsubame Industries' Archax, a 14.8 foot, 3.5 tonne piloted robot with 26 joints, carries a reported price around $2.7 million with plans to build five units, a scale the builder itself frames as proof of capability rather than a product line
  • Production capacity across AGIBOT, DEEP Robotics, and Unitree in China currently averages roughly 2,000 units yearly, with capability to scale to between 500 and 2,000 units monthly once demand materializes

Funding and Corporate Moves

  • Figure AI carries a $39 billion valuation that investors are assigning to its Helix system as a generalist embodied AI platform rather than to its hardware alone
  • UK based Humanoid closed a $152 million Series A at a $1.35 billion valuation, taking total funding to $270 million and becoming Europe's first pure play humanoid unicorn within two years, with Bosch serving as contract manufacturer and Schaeffler signing what is described as the industry's largest publicly announced commercial deployment deal
  • Unitree began trading on the Shanghai exchange as the first humanoid maker listed on the Chinese mainland, with the offering oversubscribed 8,000 times by retail investors
  • DeepSeek received a 2.31 percent allocation of Unitree's IPO shares under a 36 month lock up and will jointly develop AI models for humanoid robots with Unitree
  • Robotics funding reached $18.8 billion in the first half of 2026 alone, already exceeding all of 2025's $15 billion and the 2021 peak of $14.1 billion, across a group of fifteen startups collectively valued above $100 billion, eight of which build humanoids
  • Gravis Robotics, an ETH Zurich spinout that retrofits construction machinery with autonomous technology, raised a $200 million Series A at a $1 billion valuation led by Softbank, becoming Switzerland's newest robotics unicorn
  • NEURA Robotics raised what its founder describes as the largest full stack robotics funding round in history, with investors including NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Amazon, Bosch, Schaeffler, and the European Investment Bank, valuing the company at roughly $7 billion

Industrial Integration

  • Wandelbots NOVA links robot systems, simulations, and live production, with Deutsche Telekom's sovereign Industrial AI Cloud carrying workflows from digital modeling through to shop floor execution
  • Siemens and Rolumac Robotics integrated a new generation of delta robots directly into the SIMATIC and TIA Portal environment for machine builders
  • SAP built a working prototype linking edge robotic inspection to autonomous replenishment and robotic execution inside its own systems
  • Gartner named both Schneider Electric and Accenture Market Shapers in its June 2026 Emerging Market Quadrant for Physical AI Services
  • Bosch Sensortec's MEMS barometric pressure sensors are precise enough to detect a touch as light as a mosquito landing, giving robotic hands a functional sense of touch
  • NEURA plans to open NEURA Gym RWTH Aachen by the end of 2026, converting production floor knowledge accumulated at partner sites into deployable robot skills
  • Dexterous robotic hand prices span from $600 for LINKERBOT to $100,000 for the Shadow Robot Hand, a thousandfold range across the buyable band, while Tesla, 1X, and Figure build their hands in house rather than sell them

Hardware and Developer Tools

  • A community tutorial walks through running micro-ROS on ESP32 microcontrollers with the Arduino IDE, connecting low-cost hardware directly into ROS 2 systems
  • Strands Robots reached version 0.5.0, an open-source release aimed at interoperability across hardware and simulation platforms
  • ABB Robotics and Massive Dimension combined a GoFa arm with a filament extruder for six axis FDM 3D printing, built for education with a setup under 30 minutes and a 21.5-inch cubed build volume
  • CEAD Group 3D printed a 12-meter ship hull directly from digital models using robotic arms and large-format composite material, without traditional molds
  • Milrem Robotics runs a Tallinn facility built to produce more than 500 THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles are yearly, with the tracked, 1,200-kilogram-capable platform now fielded across 19 countries and operating in Ukraine since 2022
